Tenor to perform tonight; heritage of music explored American tenor William Brown will bring his critically acclaimed "All Black Composers Program" to Sternberger Auditorium at Guilford College at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6 Individual tickets for the Guilford College Arts Series presentation will be available at the door for $3 for adults and $2 for senior citizens and non-Guilford College students. Considered one of the outstand ing tenors to emerge recently from the ranks of America's fine young voices, Brown spent the summer of 1978 in London and Paris recording two albums with the Royal Phil harmonic Orchestra for Columbia Records and Musical Heritage, respectively. He will debut at the Paris Opera in 1981 singing the tenor lead in Virgil Thompson's Four Saints in Three Acts. By JAYNE PHIPPS BOGER On February 9th, registered voters in Greensboro will determine a much debated issue. Namely, will the liquor-by-the-drink refer endum pass or be voted down ? Since the North Carolina legis lature passed a bill legalizing liquor by-the-drink last summer, several areas in the state have passed refer endums and have begun selling drinks. Wake, Durham, Orange, Meck lenburg, Onslow, and New Hanover counties, along with Asheville, Charlotte, Southern Pines, Sanford, and Louisburg have passed refer .^^JM The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be here at Guilford College on Thursday GUILFORDIAN three consecutive seasons was a leading tenor with the Lake George Opera Festival in upstate New York. The singer has appeared in 11 world and U.S. premieres, one of which marked his debut with the New York City Opera and another his debut on ABC Network Television. His opera credits also include the Baltimore Opera Company, Washington Opera, Opera/South, Opera Ebony and the Rochester Opera Theater. Brown's major orchestra appear ances include the Cleveland Orches tra under Lorin Maazel, the Boston Symphony under Erich Leinsdorf, the Cincinnati Symphony under James Levine, the Baltimore Sym phony under Sergiu Comissiona, the Detroit Symphony, the Oakland Symphony, the North Carolina Symphony and the Brooklyn Philharmonic. Brown has been a pioneer in the field of bringing the enormous wealth of black music to diverse audiences throughout the world with his "All Black Composers Program.'' He was one of the first artists recorded for Columbia Records' project devoted to a survey of black composers. Dana scholarships open Once again the Dana Scholarship Committee must begin its evaluation of nominees for Dana Scholarships for the next academic year. It is very important that everyone parti cipate in the nomination of the Dana Scholars. Dana Scholars must meet the following criteria: the first eight days. North Carolina is facing an emer gency situation. At this time, Greensboro is 1100 pints behind. In other words, patients are using 1100 more pints of blood than the Greensboro area has contributed to the overall state supply in Charlotte. Greensboro is currently using more than 1300 pints of blood and blood products each month. Right now there is an increasing demand for new donors. A sad but realistic fact is that only 4% of eligible donors in the Greensboro area participate in the program. Here are some basic require ments that must be fulfilled in order for a person to donate blood: 1) the donor must be between 17 and 65 years of age, 2) he must weight 110 pounds of more, and 3) he must have good health. If there is some question about the health quality here are the time restrictions that the Red Cross requests that you observe: February 6, 1979 nominated by a faculty member, by a member of the administrative staff, or by a fellow student. In addition, all nominees must submit in writing a list of all the special activities and responsibilities they have undertaken during their tenure at Guilford College, as well as community activities they wish considered. A Dana Scholarship is for one year. It may be renewed, however, at the discretion of the Dana Scholar ship Committee, provided that the Scholar continutes to meet all the criteria and that all of the procedures shown above are followed, including renomination. Dana Scholars receive grants ranging from S2OO to full tuition, depending on each Scholar's need. While the Dana Scholarship Com mittee selects the Dana Scholars, the Student Aid Committee is charged with determining the amount of the grant given to each scholar. If a potential donor has an active cold accompanied by a sore throat and a fever, he should wait until recovered before attempting to donate, if a person has a cold, but no sore throat or fever and is not taking anti biotics, he may go ahead and give.
